Happy 2010!

via Polaroids and Pinholes

Wow!  What a year 2009 has been – it literally passed by in the blink of an eye leaving me feeling at once exhilarated and restless.  Exhilarated with all that I was lucky enough to accomplish and experience this year  – restless with the unfinished someday list that will roll over to 2010. I’m dedicating 2010 to crafting a more fulfilling and well balanced life.  Dedicating my time and energy to people, projects and things that make me happy, fulfilled and inspired.

In making my list, I was struck by how much I’m looking forward to the upcoming year…and how the simple joys (a home cooked meal, spending time with loved ones, practicing your craft) can make one so happy.  In the past year, there have been so many reminders of why life is difficult and many things to fret over – but in the end, most of these worrisome events are beyond control.  I choose to focus instead on why life is precious and how grateful I am to be here to experience it all.

2010 List

*Practice photography.  Food and otherwise through a daily photo assignment.  Follow my progress here.

*Host a simple dinner party monthly with some inspiration from Smitten Kitchen, Orangette and Alice Waters.

*Less stress, more time to relax, reflect and refresh.  Includes yoga at my favorite Dallas studio, writing in my gratitude journal (thanks Leslee!) and more time outside.

*Monthly craft creations.  Motivational inspiration from the Martha Stewart crafts dept, and a few of my favorite blogs – Poppytalk, Creature Comforts. Anyone want to join me in a monthly craft assignment this year?  Sewing household beauties, printing on fabric and making letterpress cards are on the line-up so far.

*Continue to evolve The Someday Blog and my writing style.  I have so enjoyed (finally!) starting this blog this year – and am looking forward to more writing in 2010.  I’m so grateful for those of you who’ve stopped by in 2009 – and especially for those of you who’ve stuck around and become regular readers.  Thank you for reading, commenting and sending notes – it’s so nice to hear from you!  To help me continue to define this blog, I’d like to hear from you  (please, pretty, pretty, please!!)  What do you love reading about?  What do you want more of from these pages?  What do you want less of from these pages?  Leave a comment on this post – or send an email to:  thesomedayblog @ gmail.com.

What’s on your 2010 list?  Whatever it is – I’m hoping it brings you happiness, peace and wonderful experiences.

I’m heading to Oklahoma for a long weekend tomorrow – see you back here on Monday for more someday fun.

Happy New Year!

xoxo, jill.

Marfa, Texas

Well, I can cross one town off my list!  I finally made the loooong journey to Marfa and enjoyed experiencing life in a small town again.  Friendly folks, beautiful scenery – the clearest night sky I’ve seen in years.  It was lovely and relaxing.  A few of my faves:

Food Shark.  An amazing food experience too cool to miss.  A food truck, a converted bus as a dining car plus the most amazing food in town.  Marfalafel.  Pork Tenderloin Salad.  Peanut Butter cookies.  yummmmm.

Wool & Hoop.  A cuter than cute craft shop dedicated to crewelwork and other types of embroidery.  Run by the ever-so-gracious Katherine Shaughnessy who wrote this lovely book full of easy to follow how-to’s and inspiring, modern patterns.  I am slowly becoming obsessed.  The texture and rich colors are definitely swoon-worthy.

A building, land, sunset and agave.

That’s a quick tour of my Marfa faves.  Stop by and say howdy yourself sometime.

Check out the rest of my photographs here.

What to Wear: New Year’s Outfits

I’ve put together a couple of easy looks to pull off for New Year’s Eve.  I’ll be spending the weekend in a cabin in Oklahoma with a small group of friends – fly fishing, reading, cooking and just hanging out.  Which of these looks will suit your evening’s plans?

For entertaining at home

New Year’s Party Inspiration

Still debating about how to ring in the New Year?  How about a simple gathering at home with your closets pals, good food, fun cocktails and great music.  I’ve rounded up the best of the web to give you easy peazy party inspiration.

The Look:

I love the look of streamers hung from above.  This image via Martha Stewart comes complete with DIY instructions.  If you don’t have the time to craft yourself – check out your local craft or paper store for some ready made garland.

Let your favors do double duty as a simple centerpiece until midnight rolls in.   Image via Martha Stewart.  I suggest sticking with a simple color palette that works with your serving pieces.  Classic gold and silver will work with anything, as will black and white.

The Goods:

I like this casual cocktail party menu from Delish.  Combining store-bought with some homemade, it makes for the perfect simple feast that won’t leave you stressed.

Serve up these yummy pomegranate ginger champagne cocktails from Epicurious.

The Playlist:

Some classics mixed with some of the best dance tunes of the past decade to help your party get it’s groove on…

  1. Good Riddance – Greenday
  2. 1999 - Prince.  Overdone – for sure, but a classic can’t miss.
  3. Just Dance – Lady Gaga
  4. Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough – Michael Jackson
  5. Party in the U.S.A. – Miley Cyrus.  Noddin’ my head like yeah, Movin’ my hips like yeah…
  6. Sexy Back – Justin Timberlake
  7. Let’s Get it Started - Black Eyed Peas
  8. Single Ladies - Beyonce
  9. Umbrella – Rihanna
  10. I Kissed a Girl – Katy Perry
  11. Fight for Your Right - Beastie Boys
  12. Celebration – Kool & the Gang
  13. Stronger – Kanye West
  14. Auld Lang Syne – Robert Burns.  For that midnight smooch.

So, whatcha waiting for?  Get those e-invites out pronto and get your party hat on!

Room Round-Up: Best Holiday Inspiration

As Christmas is so rapidly approaching, I wanted to share my favorite rooms that I’ve seen around this web that perfectly capture the holiday spirit.  This year, my travel schedule got the better of me and I didn’t even manage to hang one decoration (so sad.)  But these rooms have been a wonderful reminder of how special holiday can make a home feel…and that it doesn’t have to be at all traditional to feel festive.  The best part of this holiday is being with your family and friends – and reflecting on what’s important.  And decorated home or not – I wish you all a very Merry Christmas!

Friday…I’m in Love

Happy Friday Someday Readers!  Today I wanted to share something I’m loving right now with you…these inspiring images from Violet Bella are beautiful and dreamy.  There’s so many that I love, but I think my favorite is Peace.  I love how the light seems to move through her soul, and her quiet stance as she ponders the heavens.  I could use some of that peaceful wonder in my life right about now, how about you?

Peace

Laura, the creative soul behind Violet Bella, was so kind to answer a few questions about her work for The Someday Blog, read on for her story!

SB:  Where do you find your inspiration?

Laura:  Inspiration is all around us, its comes out in the way we perceive things. Some people see a tree while driving, and dont think twice about it. I cant help but see the shape of the tree, the light filtering through the leaves, whether its dying or vibrant with life, the shades of the leaves, etc. I do this will all things, building, people, textures.

Another big source of inspiration is filling your head and soul with images from other talented artists. Whether its a craft, a photograph, or a fine art painting, you can soak in the many different facets of the arts, which usually leads to a source of motivation, and then through being an individual, creating something unique of your own.

Serenity Collection

SB:  You’re such a multi-tasker when it comes to crafting…photography, jewelry, sewing. What’s your favorite aspect of each?

Laura:  My favorite aspect of photography would simply be creating a beautiful (to my eyes) image. I enjoy the process or journey of the photograph. From the conception, if one exists, to the actual taking of the photo, then the choosing the right image and processing it. I never know what an image will look like from the beginning.

My favorite aspect of jewelry making is just working with fun lovely things. I love working with my hands, I was a jewelry maker with my mother for years, although it was quite different. And I love all of the cute things there are in the jewelry worlds, you know, little owls and leaves and hearts and such, oh the cuteness!

My favorite aspect of sewing is the sewing itself. I find it relaxing and theraputic. I am not a seamstress by any means. I have learned along the way. My mother taught me a basic stitch and I ran from there. I mess up all the time, but I learn from it!

Bottled

SB:  What advice would you give a novice artist trying to find his/ her calling?

Laura:  If you are trying to find your calling, I say look within. Dont just see something cute and say ‘I want to do that’! Find out what it is YOU love and what YOU love doing. Start small with only one thing, if thats all that is there at the moment. The evolution of a business is ongoing and the best things grow at a natural pace. You will learn along the way what inspires you and motivates you to keep going even when you think it is all not worth it, believe me, Ive been there, alot!

Thanks Laura for sharing your someday ideas with us – stop by to say hi to Laura here.

Object Round Up: TV Trays

I’ve been blogging more and more in front of the TV while on the couch…and I’ve started to wonder if a TV tray might be a good mobile set up for me to try.  Something cute and sturdy, yet totally mobile and able to be packed away in less than one minute. What do you think of this – thumbs up or thumbs down?

Fuschia Love

My new color crush is Fuschia.  I love the bright, happy feel of this color – especially in the winter…and while I do not currently own anything quite this bright, I am seriously contemplating a closet overhaul to work it in.  I think the necklace above is my favorite.  Or the top.  Or the…
