Waiting, Waiting, Waiting…

Hello friends! Here I sit at home – patiently awaiting the arrival of our first baby. Who is either apparently going to have an extreme personality – either very Zen-like and calm (fingers crossed!) OR very stubborn and strong-willed. The due date has come and gone and the little one sits snug and quiet, showing no signs of coming out to meet his/ her anxious parents!! Oh well! In the meantime, I’ve been catching up on all things web and ~~wasting~~ enjoying lots of time reading, window shopping and bookmarking future craft projects and recipes (for when I have some free time around about – say, oh, 2013.) A few favorites from the week so far:

Three Questions for Judy Kaufmann

I stumbled upon Judy Kaufmann’s work recently, and it was love at first sight! This super talented illustrator from Barcelona instantly drew me in…

Her whimsical use of color, conversational content and modern design had me wanting to find out more and more about her work and process. So I asked her to share with us her answers to three simple questions…

Someday Girl: I adore your work – so modern, playful and fun. Where do you find your inspiration?
Judy: As I always say I’m especially inspired by things I don’t understand, don’t know, don’t know how to do or I am not. A lot of things that do not belong to my life inspire me. I’m amazed by the unexpected, the unknown, the magic, not the trick… On the other hand I also have a bizarre and explosive inspiration rush when I go to museums and galleries and get involved with different colors and formats, whether I like what I’m seeing or not. After the experience of a good exposition, it’s impossible for me not to sit at my desk to draw.

SG Name three things we’d be surprised to find in your studio/ workspace?
Judy: On my desk wall I have a picture of Linda Evangelista and other one of Charlotte Gainsbourg; they both have an inspiring beauty (: I also have a big panel with different colors printed where I can see how they behave together, apart from many different pictures and small illustrations. Maybe the most liked is an old french poster saying “Travaillez en Silence” (Work in Silence)

SG: Describe your perfect day to create.
Judy: Waking up at 9AM, turn on the heater in winter and then to sit to read my new emails. After that I have breakfast and think about the order of the day. I try to answer emails an make phone calls first in the morning. If is not to frozen outside, I always go to the swimming pool, and then all afternoon is to create. I make at least one new drawing per day. That’s my perfect and my most common day of work.

I’m having one of those never-ending crazy days (weeks, months, year…) and thinking that personalized writing goods would make it all better.

Not really, but the thought of taking the time to handwrite a heartfelt note seems like a welcome break to these technology warped hands of mine.

DIY easy notebooks

Remember those Muji notebooks I was raving about last week? Well, I got my hands on a bundle and started crafting this weekend! Using my Japanese paper tape, I grouped it into color stories for my crafting.

For this one, I made a simple graph design. Alternating a vertical with a horizontal. I love this tape because it’s so easy to work with…tears easily by hand, can be easily removed and reapplied if you don’t like your lines.

This was the first of the notebooks I’ll be making for easy holiday gifts. Paired with some color coordinated pens, I can’t wait to gift a few of these this season.

Can’t wait to craft my way through this stack!

I’m headed to New York City this week for some research and shopping and CAN’T WAIT to see what’s new in-stores! One of my most favorite stores to see in New York, London or Tokyo is Muji. They make and carry the most simple, well-designed and affordable home goods, office wares and clothing that I can’t ever leave empty handed.

I’m hopelessly addicted to their ball point pens and craft paper envelopes. I have drawers full both at home and at the office.

I love to buy their notebooks in bulk and personalize them with Japanese tape or rubber stamps to give as gifts.

And some other faves: the uncloggable spray bottle; city in a bag wooden blocks make perfect the perfect souvenir gift for kids both big and small; softest socks!

Can’t wait to see what they have in store this week!

three lil’ things i love about japan

Konnichiwa friends! i’m totally loving being immersed in Japanese culture these week – and even secretly dreaming of a someday life in Tokyo:) Three things i adore about being here, aside from the people, the food and the culture of course:

At a time when the U.S. magazine world is shrinking every day, there is nothing like a store FULL of fashion, interior and design magazines bursting with amazing inspiration! I have a box sent over monthly, but it’s still not the same as being here and perusing for myself from the hundreds of choices…

Amazing visual merchandising and store displays. Even a pair of socks is so artfully displayed here, you’ll be inspired. I have taken over 200 pictures today alone for my style files…wowzers.

And really, for a paper addict like me there is no place on earth like Japan. I want to buy an extra suitcase and stuff it full of amazing calendars, journals, postcards, note cards and books. But, don’t worry I’m restraining and only picking my favorite, favorites.

Don’t you just love coming home to a package on your doorstep? I know I do…and most especially when it’s full of lovely books that I can’t wait to read through page by page.

My most recent indulgence was three books to feed my creative soul and inspire some projects for the home, the kitchen and for work.

I love reading pretty much anything Lotta Jansdotter puts out – and this latest book (Handmade Living) is my favorite by far!

A glimpse into her enviable creative life, both at home and at work, this gem is definitely giving me loads and loads of inspiration for crafty days.

For work – a book about running a successful freelance business, Creative Inc.. It’s a blueprint full of tips and stories from two girls and their vast resources who know from experience. I love to read these types of books for my someday life…and these girls never fail to inspire and amaze. If you need a quick dose for yourself – check them out here: Meg Mateo Ilasco and Joy Cho.

Are you a sucker for those personalized recommendations that always pop up when you log-in to Amazon? I am for sure and took a chance on Paper + Craft because, well 1.) i love paper and 2.) i love that charming cover photo. Who could resist that face?

And I’m so glad I did…not only is the book completely FULL of wonderful projects that I’m planning my next dinner party around – but I also found a new online paper store to drool over. Just perfect.
