A Shot a Day (365 Small Moments)

More shots from my daily photo journey…am learning lots about how to shoot to get the best out of my camera.  And also learning what my eye is really drawn to in life.  Color, texture and detail.

DIY: Yarn Wrapped Branch

I spent much of the past weekend getting my house guest ready for the holidays…hanging pictures, getting rid of clutter we had accumulated and a touch of decorating.

I had picked up this branch on my fall trip to Broken Bow and couldn’t decide what I was going to use it for.  Until I ran across some gold yarn I had picked up for a crewel project that’s still unfinished. So I thought – quick, easy DIY.  So easy in fact, I’m a bit embarrassed to post directions…but anywho.  Any branch or yarn would work – one without the pinecones would be a bit easier, and just as pretty.  I picked the crewel yarn for it’s color, and also for it’s texture – it’s a bit more lofty than other yarns, so has a nice cozy feel – perfect for fall. I’ve seen other variations online that mix several colors of yarn, but for me – I prefer the modern look of one bold color.

To start, I secured one end of the yarn to the branch with some heavy duty tape…which gets wrapped over and over, so it’s never seen.  I would have preferred hot glue, but my gun bit the dust on my last craft project and I’ve yet to replace it.

I tried a variety of wrapping techniques…starting out using a single thread and wrapping many times around.  But as I got going, I experimented with using two sets of two threads to cover more area a bit more quickly.  To end each section, I would simply knot the ends and cut them off as close as possible.

Some sections I double wrapped, which went a bit slower than the above, but was easier to maneuver.  To start, I would use a slip knot so the yarn stayed in place…this was a helpful way to also hide the knots.

Don’t worry if bits of the bark fall off, I lost quite a bit – but in the end you will never miss them!

And done!  I left the tips exposed because I liked the juxtaposition of the bark and yarn, but feel free to end yours wherever you feel!  A quick, inexpensive, cute holiday home project.

Weekend Snapshots

Hello lovelies!  I hope that you enjoyed the long weekend as much as I did.  I love having that one extra day…finally got to some of the more in depth projects on the to-do list.  A few snapshots from my weekend.

I scavenged around a local salvage yard looking for inspiration.  And while nothing made the cut to come home with me, I did get some lovely pics!

Inspired by Ez over at Creature Comforts, I took a try at caramel making.  Three batches in, I finally got the hang of it and have to say I was quite pleased with myself.  I added Fleur de Sel sea salt to this recipe for a twist on the classic.  Adding 1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt in with the cream, just a touch.  And now I’m drizzling this goodness on apples for a yummy treat.

What were you up to this weekend?

Feather Shadow Box

Happy Friday friends!  I got inspired last night to create a simple feather shadow box for our home.  I love to use shadow boxes to highlight eclectic curio displays.  They can be changed quickly – depending on your latest obsession and are so simple and easy to create.  In this one, I used various feathers and some old stamps.

I purchased these feathers at a store in Austin, but I’ve also started collecting them on my morning walks so I can do a few more pieces.  I’m sure my neighbors think I’m insane always scavenging about…I like the variance in size and stripes…I used the West Elm Shadow Box, but you can find your own at any craft store.  I chose this one because the natural linen was a nice backdrop to the neutral pieces.  I used hot glue to apply the feathers – sorry no photos…not enough hands.  And I’d be lying if I told you this took any longer than 15 minutes to put together.  Simple.  Gratifying.  And still had time to sip my tea and write you this post.

In case you missed it this week:

I’m loving kilim accents in the home, aren’t you?
Summer is here and I can’t wait to have my first patio party.

DIY project inspiration

via Ideal Home

Hello lovelies.  I’ve been in need of some decorating inspiration today…something simple.  Something to brighten a space, room or nook.  Something meaningful.  Colorful.  Graphic.  Just something to get me crafting, making or doing.  Bring on the inspiration!

via Anthropologie

I love the images above for the lovely sayings and the simple graphic quality.  Such an easy project to recreate with stencil letters, wood scrap, large canvas or a linen pillowcase.  I think something with texture in the material really lends itself to this stenciled look.  I have an old dresser that might be just the candidate for this look….

via Pia Ulin

I love the look of the black shields mixed with antlers above.  Totally modernizes the room in a bold way.  This project would be super simple – crests and shields could be found at your local craft store, painted a bold color and hung in random order.  So fun!

This would be such a quick and easy update to a foyer or hallway.  Pick up a few frames from the dollar store or a garage sale, slap on a quick coat of glossy paint and arrange them on the wall.

I love the repetition of the vintage Vogue magazines or cameras above, would be a great easy-Saturday project if you already have a collection worthy of display.

Do you have any projects on tap for this weekend?

March Craft Project

3 months in, I’ve finally been able to complete my first monthly craft project from my Happy 2010 list!  While unpacking my office this weekend, I came across a couple of my Mrs. John L. Strong stationery boxes.  Sadly, this amazing line of stationary has been discontinued…but I absolutely adore the wood boxes the paper came in.  I also ran across some of my old acrylic craft paint that I had been storing out of sight, and had thus forgotten about.  I decided to merge the two and get those boxes show ready!

And being me – I totally forgot to take a before picture of the boxes.  Photo from luxist.com

A few of my favorite paint colors that came together beautifully for this project.

I used simple sponge brushes…a favorite of mine for small projects.  Cheap, resuable and easy to work with!

The prepwork.  I applied 2 coats to make the color vibrant and true…and then sealed with an acrylic matte coating to protect them.

Have you been crafty lately?  I’d love to see your work..send me an email at thesomedayblog@gmail.com.

Tulle Pom Poms

Happy Monday!  I hope that you all had as lovely a weekend as I did…I had some much needed girl time – drinking wine, catching up and just relaxing.  And also found time to start a few new projects around the casa…painting the laundry room mainly.  I’ll share pictures as soon as it’s done.

In the meantime, many of you wrote me about the tulle ball image I shared with you on Friday asking how it could be recreated and today I’m happy to share simple DIY project found via Once Wed.  I can’t stop thinking of all the places these tulle pom poms would be delightful!

OR…you could purchase the beauties above from Etsy seller Princess DoodleBeans.  You can custom order in any of over 30 colors of tulle, in small ($4) or large ($7) sizes.  I can’t wait to put these to use…for a shower, in my craft room or for a fun gift.  Only have to decide what color!

inspired walls

As I’ve mentioned, we’ve just moved into a house full of lots of natural light, high ceilings and BIG WHITE WALLS.  I’ve been on the hunt for some inspiration on how to fill the walls creatively and inexpensively.  I hit up some of the usual blog loves, and also found a few new ones that I couldn’t resist sharing with you.

This is gorgeous and graphic.  Simple yarn and fabric, I’m thinking to do mine a bit more mutli-color?

I love this tape installation by the super talented Rebecca Ward at the Kate Spade store…I’ve been thinking it would be a great way to fill a large canvas on the cheap and chic.

I love this colorful repetition, fun for an office!

So easy and a great way to bring pattern + softness into the house…

A focal point for all of my experimental photography…and it could change out as I get so inspired.

DIY Yarn Flower

One of my favorite Sunday rituals is to scour the web for inspiring DIY projects that I promise I will do…someday.  This one was TOO cute not to share with you!  This lovely tutorial was posted on Poopscape Projects (did you just silently giggle too?) which I found via Canuck Crafts.   I can’t wait to make these adorable yarn flowers again and again.

Full instructions can be found here with wonderful step by step photography.  It looks simple and so fun!

Closet Craving: Organization

40 boxes, a weekend with a U-Haul and one sore back later and we’re in the new house.   And for the first time, my husband and I will be sharing a closet. I’m not sure who’s dreading this more.  Needless to say, I’m in need of major organization tips. Where to turn, but to Martha Stewart?  These images and articles provided some inspiration to help me whip our shared 10 square feet of space into something beautiful, organized and easy to maintain.  At least I’m hoping…

what a great way to store scarves, belts and ties!

to maintain the jewelry madness.

i’m loving the orange storage boxes…

Some of my favorite articles on closet organization can be found here.

xoxo, jill.
