in my files…comfy homes

Monday, already?  Where did the weekend go?  I’ve lost track of time and completely missed it…Today I’m in Hong Kong, the last stop on my adventure through Asia (a work trip no less:) and am a wee-bit homesick.

Homesick for my wonderful home in the making – which I promise to share as soon as I get some things hung on the wall and the place a bit more gussied up and debut ready.  Instead, I’m sharing a glimpse into my inspiration file that I’ve been collecting to guide me in my own home decor.  I use (and adore) pinterest to keep my online tears organized.

I’m striving to create a look that’s modern yet rustic at the same time.  Something gorgeous, but also lived in.  These rooms strike the perfect balance of personalized style + comfy abode.  By combining natural elements like antlers, hides and plants with simple streamlined  furniture and sticking to a mostly neutral color palette, these rooms please both the eye and the soul.

I want to stretch out in any of these for a good, long weekend with a stack of magazines and a big glass of pinot noir.  Mmmm.  Perfection!  Hope your week is off to a good start!

Etsy Finds: Art Wall

I love the simple repetition of the black and white art, framed in mis-matched perfection of this hallway and think it would be perfect in just about any home.  Large or small wall, nook or entire room – it seems like the perfect collection to start today.

Dose of Inspiration

Happy Monday!  I’m feeling refreshed and ready today as I prepare to head out for London + Stockholm.  I love to travel and soak up much inspiration and creativity…this one promises to be over-the-top.

Over the weekend, I tested out some photography + Photoshop skills I’ve been learning in an online course I’m taking.  And practiced my skills while building a little moodboard to share with you.  A few of my favorite things that have been hanging around my studio waiting to find their purpose – japanese fabics + tapes, paper remnants, my beloved lomo camera, a feather i found on a walk, yarn ready to be embroidered, book binding tape and some mini pencils.  I find inspiration in so many place – but especially in color, texture and pattern.  My studio is full of supplies that highlight this.

Where do you find inspiration?

Today I’m Loving: Modern Genealogy

Happy Monday friends!  I hope you all had a wonderful weekend…mine led me to a very long car ride from New Jersey to Connecticut which left me lots of time to reflect.  And it got me thinking about family history and specifically genealogy.

Something that my grandmother was always into – and something which I thought was cool to think about but not to display in my home.  That is, until I stumbled upon My Tree and Me – a shop that does super cool, totally modernized family trees.  And now I’ve started to reconsider their place in the modern home.

I love the wonderful usage of color, strong graphic sensibilities and the way each is photographed in a way that I can totally borrow for my own home.  And another highlight?  1% of profits are donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation…a cause that’s very near and dear to my heart.

So now the only thing I’m thinking about is which one I’ll be ordering…soon.

You?

Summer Home Inspiration

via Sunset

I love the idea of a summer cottage.  The Modern Cottage Idea House, above, seems to fit the bill for my perfect someday summer home.  I love the color and material choices, the modern vibe and the fact that it’s green (both in color and in build) makes me really happy!  Modern Cabana, the company that builds the prefab beauty shown above and below – uses FSC certified woods for construction and recycled denim for insulation.

The landscaping is oh-so perfect as well…especially that vertical garden!  Oy!

This casual bedroom looks like the perfect cottage retreat…textured fabrics, mis-matched stripes and a calming neutral palette soothes the soul.

This porch makes me want to make a pitcher of tea, grab a book and lounge the afternoon away…I love the bold color and the modern take on wicker furniture!

via Modern Beach House

A must-have bigger than big dining table…to host all of my family and friends that I would want to share this space with.  This amazing house above is available to rent in Oregon.  Yes, please!

A large outdoor area to entertain and lounge by the pool…

Someday, maybe we’ll have a second home – but for now I’m perfectly content to lust over these lovely images…

Hello, Splendor Interview + Giveaway!

I’m so excited to share today’s interview with Beth Dotolo with you.  Beth is a most amazing multi-tasker, juggling all the joys of being an amazing interior designer, wife, mom to the oh-so-cute Maxton, blogger of both Hello, Splendor and Nest Interior Design, jewelry designer and on, and on.  I’m exhausted just thinking of all this wonder woman has going on!    Today Beth is sharing her inspiration insight with us in her Top 5 Places to Find Inspiration.
1. I’ve been finding my inspiration lately on pinterest.com. It’s basically a website for inspiration boards consisting of links from all over the web. It so beautifully organizes your favorite links into categories. And, the best part is that you can ‘like’, ‘repin’, and ‘follow’ other peoples boards to be constantly updated with the things that inspire them. It’s my new favorite site! Here’s a link to my pinterest: pinterest.com/bethdotolo/
2. Showrooms! One of my favorite places to be inspired are fabric and wallpaper showrooms. On the top of my list is ID Collection. They have a huge collection of American and European lines that are all displayed and styled amazingly. (http://www.interiordesigncollection.com/)
Sex and the City 2 via Elle Decor
3. Movies and Television. Set styling has been elevated lately to a new level and I am constantly being distracted from what I’m actually watching to dissect the environment. It’s the designer in me! Watch shows like Gossip Girl or The Tudors to see what I mean. Even the movie The Box was chock full of bold vintage wall papers and lovely spaces all very dynamic and beautifully lit. And, Hello… Sex and the City 2! I’m actually using a fabric on a client that I saw (after the fact) on a headboard in one of the trailers.
4. Oh, the blogs… there are too many that I read on a daily basis to even list. But, when I don’t have time to sift through them all in one sitting, here are the blogs I click on first: Style/SWOON, Aspiring Kennedy, Sea of Shoes, Fabulous K, The Bedlam of Beefy, A Cup of Jo, & Desire to Inspire.
5. Traveling is always inspiring. Not only because you’re exposed to new surroundings, but because most of the time it allows you to clear your head. Reset. And, let new inspiration take over. I don’t get to travel as much as I would like, but it’s on the top of my priority list!
Thanks Beth for sharing all of your wonderful inspiration ideas!  Now – for the giveaway…Beth is graciously offering up one of her stunningly simple necklaces.  The Someday Necklace, yes, named after this blog, will be given to a one of you!  All you need to do to enter this giveaway is leave a comment on this post with you favorite part of Beth’s interview.  Winner will be chosen at random and announced on Tuesday, June 15th.  Happy Commenting!
AND – I almost forgot – I’ve got the first of my guest posts up on Hello, Splendor today.  I’ll be the chatting about fashion on Beth’s blog, pop over and say hi!

Today I’m Loving Terrafirma Ceramics

Over the weekend, I stumbled upon two amazing shops in Philadelphia – Open House and Petulia’s Folly.  Both had many things to inspire and many things I wanted to pack in my already over-stuffed suitcase.  I settled on a few pieces from Terrafirma Ceramics (each store carried a small selection of this line.)  I love the way New York artist Ellen Evans has put a modern spin on her handmade pottery.

Each piece is rich in texture – inspired from lace, honeycomb or even animal skins.  Her prices are great (bowls were around $34 and the above platter was $98) and each piece is signed and dated by the artist, and is food and dishwasher safe. The hardest part was choosing which piece to keep for myself and which to share as gifts…

I’ve had a bit of a tough time tracking down where you can buy her collection online, but did find that Eden Organic carries a few pieces.  You could also contact Ellen directly through her website here.

xoxo, jill.
